For a long time I have concentrated on aesthetically pleasing functional pots, constantly challenged to find the right balance between the aesthetics and the functionality. The jug that doesn’t drip and the teapot that pours cleanly are every potter’s betes noir. In recent years I have concentrated on raku fired work decorated with with horsehair, feathers and iron lustre. In 2018 I spent 5 weeks in Rome undertaking a residency at the C.R.E.T.A. ceramics school and studio which has led me towards an entirely new aesthetic and my current work which is decorated with crackle glazes and striking black and white geometric designs. Potters of the Song dynasty (960-1279) are thought to be the first to treat crazing as a decorative effect. The glaze is often stained to highlight the pattern of crackles.
